This weeks activity is inspired by the Sophocles quote: “one must learn by doing the thing, for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try” (as cited in Rogers, 2003, p. 168).
Now that you have time to think about what the different blogs look like and what level of information you wish to share, now is the time to get started. The course material this week provided an overview of four different blogging platforms (WordPress.com, WordPress.org, Blogger, and Tumblr). There are many others out there. Some of the blog mentors choose to use other platforms – and can help you if you wish to blog somewhere else. This weeks activity is to get started!
If at any point in this process you have questions, or want advice – then please ask. We (the cancer blog mentors) are here to help you get started.
Before starting your ‘official’ blog, I highly recommend that you create a throw-away blog on the various platforms and play with it to see what you like and don’t like about the platform. If you use a domain name that you do not want to keep, then you can feel free to “break” things as you learn how to use the platform.
Here are the steps to creating your blog:
- Choose your blogging platform.
- Choose your blog name.
- Create your blog.
- Add in the content you already have (About Me page, first and second posts).
- Play around with and choose a theme (this is how your blog will look).
- Ask lots of questions.
